Visceral Manipulation (VM)
What is Visceral Manipulation?
Visceral relates to the internal organs of the body, such as the liver, kidneys and intestines. Visceral Manipulation (VM) is a gentle manual therapy that aids your body’s ability to release restrictions that cause pain and dysfunction. It is used to locate and solve problems throughout the body. It encourages your own natural functioning of your organs, alleviate the negative effects of stress, enhance mobility of the musculoskeletal system throughout the connective attachments and influence general metabolism.
Our organs move with us so as you turn and bend some of your organs move a little too. Your intestines move to allow food to travel though them and your liver and kidneys move as you breathe. Visceral manipulation encourages healthy movement of the organs being treated.
Restrictions caused by surgery, infection, injury or inactivity are manipulated using a mixture of gentle compression, massage and release of organ or tissue tightness. In the case of digestive problems, this can help to maintain proper movement and rhythm of digestive organs which, in turn, can make you feel more comfortable. VM can be a very relaxing experience.
